Luke Cage: Why We’re Excited About Marvel’s Newest Netflix Series

All of us here at Gagen girls are HUGE Marvel fans and love a good superhero movie or TV show. Mom has a special place in her heart for Iron Man, Mr Anderson absolutely adores the Avengers, and me? Well I’m head over heels for just about any character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel's Jessica Jones on Netflix

Most recently, one of the highlights of the MCU was the Jessica Jones TV series released on Netflix last year. Compelling characters, riveting storytelling…this show had it all. I binge-watched the 13 episodes in just a few days – to the point where Mr Anderson phoned me at a pivotal scene in the last episode and I seriously debated not answering (I eventually did answer, but told him to make it quick).

I was elated to hear in January that Jessica Jones was renewed for a second season. Imagine how ecstatic I was that, in addition, Luke Cage would also be getting his own Netflix series.

The series is set to be released on September 30, with all episodes being released at once because Netflix is awesome.  Take a look at the trailer recently released:

Netflix’s Official Release:

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city – forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.

Here’s what else we know:

Luke Cage (played by Mike Colter) got his Cinematic debut in the first episode of Marvel’s Jessica Jones season one.  {Minor Spoilers Ahead}  Shown in seven of the thirteen episodes, Cage was shown to be owning a bar and trying to maintain a low-profile life. By the end of the season, Cage was a firm ally of Jones despite having lost so much.

As shown in the trailer, Luke Cage makes the move from Hell’s Kitchen to Harlem.  This is all set a few months after the events of Jessica Jones, as confirmed by Colton.  Is he trying to start a new life away from Jessica?  Or have the series events forced him to Harlem from lack of other options?

Luke Cage marks the third of four heroes to get a Netflix series. A plan revealed two years ago states that four Marvel characters – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist – would receive original Netflix series, with the whole web culminating in a mini-series “The Defenders” bringing the four heroes together.

Luke Cage and Jessica Jones have a history. I haven’t read the comics personally, but the two characters eventually marry and have a daughter together.  Is this where these two incarnations of the characters are heading?  Fun side-note: Luke Cage also partnered up with Iron Fist in the comics, which makes sense as we head closer and closer to the planned Defenders mini-series.

The episode titles are all named after Gang Starr tracks. Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker has been releasing the episode titles on Twitter. These include: Moment of Truth, Code of the Streets, Who’s Gonna Take the Weight?, Step in the Arena, Just to Get a Rep, and Suckas Need Bodyguards.

The series is sure to excite.  In an interview with CBR.com, Colton explained that “It’s going to be action-packed, from beginning to the very end. Trust me.”

The cast includes Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes (played by Mahershala Ali), Misty Knight (Simone Missick) and Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodard).  Cage gets his allies but also quite a few baddies to deal with.

Nurse Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) will also be there.  This will now be her third appearance in a Marvel Netflix series – the first two being Daredevil and Jessica Jones – adding that layer of connectivity and completion within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Essentially, ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage’ has everything going for it.  I’m pumped, how about you?
