Time-Saving Tips for Working Moms

Is work keeping you from spending time with your family? Are you struggling to balance everything on your plate? Well, I have some secrets to share that will help make life easier for the working mom. This blog post includes time-saving tips and getting things done efficiently, so grab a cup of coffee and read on!

Some of these are time-saving tips I still use today. I work from home full-time and take care of my grandsons in the mornings and afternoons before and after school while their parents are at work.

Have An Awesome Daily Routine

It’s time to get the day off to a great start! This is where you can take care of any tasks that need to be completed before leaving (or if you work from home, before starting your workday). These can include tasks such as watering plants, getting lunch ready, or prepping the evening meal.

The morning routine is crucial for working mothers who always seem to be running short on time. There are many tasks that need to be completed before the day starts. It’s important not to get overwhelmed with them all at once!

Some of the things you might also want to include in your morning routine are getting dressed, having breakfast as a family, taking care of any little ones, making sure they’re clean, and fed, brushing their teeth, combing their hair etc. I like to sit down and just brainstorm all the things that need to be done on a daily basis. Then, I go through and figure out which ones need to be completed in the morning. Sometimes I think of the logistical reasons as well as those for my peace of mind.

Be sure to consider that if you can finish these tasks in the morning, this will save you from having to complete them later in the day. That’s when time seems shorter and getting chores done is more difficult because everyone is tired. For this routine to work well, it is important that other family members know what needs to be done on a daily basis too. Get them invested and participating!

Get Ready For The Morning Before Bed.

One of the most effective time-saving tips for working moms is to prepare for your mornings in advance. Pick out your next day’s outfit in advance if possible, including accessories. This will allow you more time to do other morning responsibilities like packing lunches for the kids and pre-making dinner.

Parents should ensure that their children’s homework is completed, uniforms or clothes are available for the next day (depending on whether they are at school), meals are prepared, and snacks are set out.

Be sure that your kids’ shoes or boots and other outerwear are ready to go too. A last-minute search for a missing mitten just as it’s time to head out the door for school is never a great way to start your day.

A breakfast station is a great way to make mornings less hectic. If you prepare the ingredients ahead of time, it will be simple for your family members. Pack the kids’ lunch the night before to free up more time in your mornings. If you can prep some lunches ahead of time on the weekend, that’s even better.

What if you didn’t have to worry about what supplies or homework items you needed for the next day? What would your morning routine look like then?

The best way to start off a productive school day is by setting up everything needed in one place the night before. One of those things includes packing backpacks with all the necessary equipment, including pencils, pens, planners, and textbooks.

Don’t forget about your own meals and work supplies too!

Keep an Ongoing Shopping List

If you’re like me and have had a frustrating experience where you’ve forgotten something at the grocery store. Try keeping a running shopping list of items that come up during the week.

There are apps out there specifically for this. You might find it easier to use your notes app or just take pictures of all the things you need to remember to buy. The other thing that works for us is to add them to Instacart. That way, we can just use it as a shopping list if we’re shopping in person or hit “submit” if it becomes more convenient to have it delivered. This way the whole family can access it and with 3 adults in the house, that is a necessity.

Organize Your Chores

The ideal way to stay on top of chores is by using a strategy that will keep you from getting overwhelmed.

To save time, choose your most important task from the list and then start with it! This will make accomplishing each chore more efficient than waiting until later in the day when other tasks may have piled up as well.

If children are helping around the house, they should be given their own chart to see what needs to be done for themselves. Or if you have a little planner in your house like us, this can help them handle transitions a little easier.

Pay Your Recurring Bills Automatically Online, so you can forget about them.

You will never have to worry about forgetting your monthly bills and utility payments again. Set up a billing schedule for recurring expenses. Then, you won’t be stuck wondering where all of the money went at month’s end.

My bank will even post reminders in my account when I access it online giving me a heads-up about upcoming payments. Since I have multiple accounts, this is a great way to be reminded to move money if needed.

Grocery Shop Online Instead Of In Store

Working moms who want to save time can shop for groceries online and get household items delivered. Or maybe this is a task that could be delegated to another family member. In our home, my son-in-law tends to do most of the shopping because he has more time for it.

Another option is to turn grocery shopping into a family activity. Some kids really love going to the grocery store – my grandsons sure do! This can be a great learning experience too. Give kids their own lists (with picture cues to help them if not reading yet) and they can help shop.

Organize Your Laundry

We have set up a laundry schedule and each person in the family has their own day. The boys have small clothing so they share a day for now. We have a day for linens as well.

This helps us keep laundry on track. We used to just throw a mixture in and then invariably, someone would be yelling “I have no underwear” at least one morning each week. It helps each person to take ownership for their own laundry by making sure that they have all their laundry in their hamper and not lying all over the floor.

Final Thoughts

These tips may seem simple, and even, obvious but they can certainly be a big help in keeping things organized around your home. The more time you can save on chores and tasks around the house, the more time you’ll have available for spending time with your kids and giving yourself some self-care/
