Supplies You’ll Need for Your Puffy Paint Ice Cream Craft:
- ¼ C white school glue (per color)
- ¼ C foam shaving cream (per color)
- Food coloring
- Bowls (per color)
- Spoon
- Paintbrushes
- Sprinkles – optional
- Bubble wrap
- Brown acrylic paint
- Scissors
- Black Sharpie
- White cardstock, colored construction, or colored printer paper.

How to Make Puffy Paint for Your Ice Cream:
Gather all the supplies needed.

In a small bowl add ¼ C of white school glue with equal parts foaming shaving cream. Stir to mix.

Add a drop or two of food coloring, and stir to combine. Repeat this step to create all the puffy paint colors you’d like. Set aside.

Create the Bubble Wrap Cone:

Draw a triangle on the bubble wrap using the black Sharpie. Cut that triangle shape out. Set aside.

Add a squirt of brown paint to the bumpy side of the bubble wrap, and brush the paint to cover the whole triangle.

Place the bubble wrap, paint side down, onto the paper of your choice. Create as many “cones” as you’d like. Set aside to dry for a few minutes.

Assemble and Decorate Your Ice Cream Art:

Paint on the puffy paint to create ice cream on top of your cone.

Add sprinkles (if using).
Allow the puffy paint to dry.
Tips for Puffy Paint Success:
It will stay puffy for a few days, but the puff paint will lose texture after a while. Puffy paint is for one-time use.

Shaving Cream Puffy Paint FAQs
Can I use regular shaving cream instead of foam?
Foam shaving cream is best because it helps the paint hold its puffy texture. Gel-based creams won’t give the same effect.
What kind of glue works best?
Standard white school glue (like Elmer’s) works perfectly. Avoid using clear glue, as it won’t hold the puff as well.
Does the puffy paint stay puffy forever?
Nope! It will stay raised and soft for a few days, but eventually, it will flatten out. It’s best enjoyed as a fun temporary craft. We like to take pictures of these crafts so we can look back at them long after we make them.
Can I make this craft in a classroom or group setting?
Absolutely! Just pre-cut the bubble wrap cones and pre-mix the paint colors ahead of time for a smoother experience.
Can I store leftover puffy paint?
Puffy paint doesn’t store well — it’s best to make only what you need and use it up right away for the best results.
