Outdoor Family Earth Day Activities

Plant a tree

Trees help reduce energy consumption, provide homes for birds and animals, and also help improve air quality. Take part in your community’s tree planting project or plant a tree in your own yard.

Take your kids on a nature scavenger hunt

Jot down a list of things found in nature around your neighborhood or that you can find in your local park. Take your kids out and let them explore while checking things off the list.

Watch the sun rise or set

Enjoy the sounds of birds chirping as you watch the sunrise, or snuggle up next to each other and watch the sunset. Either way is a beautiful way to enjoy Earth Day.

Take a hike

Head down to your local park trails or head a national park for scenic views on the trails. Soak up some vitamin D while experiencing all that the great outdoors offers.

Organize a neighborhood safari

Try out this fun idea I came up with of having a neighborhood safari as a great way to learn about the animals in your neighborhood. Encourage your kids to walk around the neighborhood and spot the local wildlife.

Clean up the neighborhood

Get together with your family and volunteer at a nearby park, trail, or roadside and collect garbage from the area. It’s not glamorous, but it will help teach your family the importance of caring for our planet.

Enjoy a family bike ride

Get outside and enjoy Mother Earth in a fun and active way. Try a new bike trail or head to a familiar favorite in your area.

Plant or plan out a family garden

Visit the local nursery and let your family help pick out this year’s family garden. Remember what vegetables and flowers you want to grow, and get your kids involved.

Head to the playground

If your kids are anything like mine, then there is nothing that a playground can’t solve. Let your kids run around and enjoy the great outdoors and appreciate the sunshine on their faces.

Go on a nature walk

What better what to start Earth Day than by getting out in nature? Take your kids to a local pond, forest, or somewhere to spend time in nature.

Making Earth Day fun doesn’t have to be a challenge. You can easily get outside and find something that works best for you and your family. Whether you want to spend the day hiking, picking up trash, or just watching the sunset, any time you choose to spend Earth Day as a family will be great.
