Thanksgiving food doesn’t have to be complicated to be fun! These easy Thanksgiving turkey snack trays turn simple foods like crackers, cheese, pepperoni, grapes, and pears into something extra festive for the holiday.

There are two versions to choose from — a savory turkey made with cheese, crackers, and pepperoni, and a fruit and cheese turkey that adds a little something sweet to the snack table. Both are simple to put together and easy to adapt using ingredients your family enjoys.

Serve one while everyone is waiting for Thanksgiving dinner, add it to your appetizer table, or make both and let everyone pick their favorite. They’re almost too cute to eat. Almost.

How to Make the Turkey Cheese and Cracker Tray

  1. Start with the crackers. Arrange the crackers in a wide fan shape around the upper half of a round serving platter. These form the outer layer of the turkey’s feathers.
  2. Add the cheese. Cut the cheese slices into smaller squares and arrange them in overlapping rows just inside the crackers. Alternate the different cheeses to add some color and interest.
  3. Add a row of pepperoni. Arrange overlapping pepperoni slices inside the cheese layers, following the same curved shape.
  4. Make the turkey’s body. Layer additional pepperoni slices down the center of the platter to create the turkey’s head and body.
  5. Add the face. Place two candy eyes near the top of the turkey’s head. Cut a small triangle from white cheese for the beak and a small piece of yellow cheese for the wattle.
  6. Finish with the feet. Cut two little turkey feet from yellow cheese and place them at the bottom of the pepperoni body.

There’s no need to make the arrangement perfectly symmetrical. Just keep overlapping and adjusting the ingredients until the platter looks full and your turkey takes shape.

What You’ll Need

  • Green grapes
  • Red grapes
  • Cheese, cut into cubes
  • 1 pear
  • Candy eyes
  • A small piece of cheese for the beak
  • A tiny piece of red grape or other red fruit for the wattle
  • 2 pretzel sticks for the legs

How to Make the Fruit and Cheese Turkey Tray

  1. Start with the grapes. Arrange the green grapes in a wide fan around the upper half of a round serving platter to create the outside layer of the turkey’s tail.
  2. Add the red grapes. Make another curved row of red grapes just inside the green grapes.
  3. Add the cheese. Arrange the cheese cubes in a curved row inside the grapes, continuing the layered feather effect.
  4. Make the turkey’s body. Place the pear in the center of the platter with the narrow end pointing up to form the turkey’s head.
  5. Add the face. Attach two candy eyes to the pear. Cut a tiny triangle of cheese for the beak and a small piece from a red grape for the wattle.
  6. Add the legs. Place two pretzel sticks beneath the pear to make the turkey’s legs.
  7. Make any final adjustments. Fill in gaps with extra grapes or cheese until the turkey’s tail looks nice and full.

Easy Substitutions and Variations

One of the best things about these Thanksgiving turkey snack trays is how easy they are to customize. Use what your family likes, what you already have on hand, or whatever looks good at the grocery store.

For the savory tray, try different varieties of sliced cheese, swap the pepperoni for another sliced meat, or use your favorite round crackers. You can also add another layer of crackers or cheese if you’re feeding a larger group.

For the fruit tray, you can swap the grapes for berries, apple slices, orange segments, or other bite-sized fruit. Different cheeses work well here too — just choose one that can easily be cut into cubes.

And, of course, the little turkey details don’t have to be exact. Use whatever you have available for the eyes, beak, wattle, and legs. No one needs to buy an entire container of strawberries for one tiny turkey wattle.

Make-Ahead and Serving Tips

Both of these turkey snack trays are quick to assemble, but you can do some of the prep ahead of time to make Thanksgiving Day even easier.

For the cheese and cracker tray, slice the cheese and prepare the little pieces for the turkey’s face and feet ahead of time. Keep them covered in the refrigerator until you’re ready to assemble the platter. I’d wait to add the crackers until closer to serving so they stay crisp.

Since these trays contain perishable ingredients, keep them refrigerated until you’re ready to serve. Health Canada recommends keeping cold foods cold and discarding perishable foods that have been at room temperature for more than two hours.

For the fruit tray, wash and thoroughly dry the grapes ahead of time and cut the cheese into cubes. You can assemble most of the tray shortly before serving, but wait to cut and decorate the pear until then so it looks fresh.

If you’re serving either tray before Thanksgiving dinner, remember that people tend to graze when there’s a cute turkey full of cheese sitting in front of them. You may want to make a little more than you think you’ll need.
